Winter Activities for Toddlers

This week’s theme was all about winter! So we went to the library to pick out some winter-themed books and I put together four winter activities to do with my toddler. The activities range from fine motor to sensory play, to counting and gross motor. Let’s dive in and don’t forget to grab the free printable at the bottom!

So we went to our local library and found a couple of snow-related books. The first was “The Snowbelly Family of Chillyville Inn” and the second was “When the Snow is Deeper Than My Boots Are Tall”. My favorite was the Boots book but little man’s favorite was Chillyville Inn. Both are super cute books to read with this week’s topic.

Snow Sensory Bin

his has been a hit in our house! The last few weeks the temps have been below zero and this was a perfect way to bring some play inside 😊

It takes about 2 minutes to set up and my little man played with it for a good 45 minutes and then asked if we could do it again when Dad gets home so he could show him.

It works a bit better if the snow has a few minutes to warm up so it can compact easier. But we built snowmen with the measuring cups, made shapes in the snow with cookie cutters, and dug holes to the bottom of the bin. Lots of fun things!

Sticker Snowflake

This was a really easy craft that worked on fine motor skills!

It took me about 2 minutes to set up. All you need is a piece of paper, tape, and a marker.

1. Draw a snowflake on the paper (it doesn’t have to be perfect)
2. Rip up small pieces of tape

3. Have your child stick the tape “right on the lines”
4. Add bigger pieces of tape at each end of the snowflake.

Snowman Counting

This winter toddler activity was pretty fun! My son considered it a game and asked to play it multiple times throughout the week. All you need is the printable at the bottom, some tape, cotton balls. We walked through the activity together first by putting the right number of cotton balls in each snowman. Then, I added in cooking tongs to let him work on his fine motor skills. Lastly, to add another challenge I had him try to pick up the number of cotton balls he needed all at once.

Snow Tracks

This was a super fun game for my toddler. I cut out the snow tracks from the printable (I printed 5 copies so we had 10 tracks) then we gathered a bunch of his stuffed animals. I had him close his eyes as I made the tracks lead to one of his stuffed animals I had hidden. After I did that a bunch of times then he got to make the tracks and hide the animal. That part was definitely more tricky for him but he still loved it!
