This week we read books and did activities all about construction trucks. My little man’s favorite thing ever is trucks so I thought we’d come up with some activities. I also created a free printable for one of the activities that you can grab at the bottom of this post!
Library Books
The three books we found at the library to go along with our theme are
1. “Mighty, Mighty Construction Site”
2. “Whose Truck?”
3. “With Any Luck, I’ll Drive a Truck”
Little man’s favorite is number one and my favorite is number 3 😊
Truck Color Sort
Color sort dump truck was a fun way to start off our construction trucks week 🚜 It was really easy to get together and helped us work on our colors.
Set up time – 5 minutes
What you need:
-Color paper
-Tape
-Blocks or other colorful toys that can be sorted
-Dump truck toy
Then just have your little one sort the toys by their colors 😊
Construction Site PlayDough
We made playdough for our construction sensory play. It was pretty easy to make, the hardest part was finding a way to make the colors.
Recipe:
2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 Tablespoons oil
1 cup HOT water
We then mixed/kneaded it and split it in half to make the two colors
>For brown we did 3 drops red, 3 drops of green, and 1 drop of blue
>For grey we added some black washable paint
Tips:
-Add the food coloring to your hot water to make it easier to mix in
-Too sticky? Add more flour
-Too dry? Add more water
Dump Truck Obstacle Course
This one was fun to play together and really worked on gross motor skills for little man.
What you need:
-Tape
-A Box
-Balloons
-Construction Signs (Free Printable)
This activity took about 10 minutes to set up. I put up the signs and created a tape road/obstacle course for my son to follow. Then we put the balloons on one end and he had to bring them to the other end to dump them. We taped the cardboard box to him and he became the dump truck. We tried it a few different ways, one with him walking, then crawling, and then using his own dump truck toy to go through the course.
Let me know if you have any favorite truck activities for toddlers in the comments below!
