I don’t know about you but when we were starting our family I was trying to find kids Christmas traditions that we could do for years down the road. We do the common ones like baking cookies for Santa, decorating the Christmas tree, and Christmas pajamas, but my favorite Christmas tradition with our kids is a Christmas book countdown.
Christmas Book Countdown
With this Christmas tradition, we get 24 different Christmas books and wrap them all up to put underneath our Christmas tree at the beginning of December. Then each night before bed our kids pick one wrapped book to open and we read it together as a family. Once we have opened up the book we put it back under the tree so the kids can read it whenever they want.
Helpful Tips
I know 24 books sound very daunting to buy and I thought so too. So we built our collection up over the years. The first year you may only start with 5 days before Christmas and then 10 the next year and so on. That is totally great! Your kids will love this memory with you no matter how many nights it is.
I always like to look for our books at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, or Marshalls. You can usually find some books for under 5$ there. I also found some awesome ones at Target on a Black Friday Sale!
Buy for the next year after Christmas! I will look for a few new books after Christmas is over, that way the books are on sale!
If you have more than one kid it can be tough to decide who gets to pick the book for the night. We have always just done one kid gets to pick it and one kid gets to open it. You could do something like this or just have an order of who gets to pick the book on what night.
Merry Christmas!
I hope your family loves this as much as ours does! Let me know if your family has any favorite kids Christmas traditions.
