As a stay at home mom, I wanted to try my hand at homemade baby foods. It seemed like a good way to save money and easy enough to do while our son napped. After trying it a time or two I actually started loving it! Even though I HATE cooking for myself it was fun and easy enough to do for our little man. I’ve made many different combinations for his baby food but these were the easiest I found to make especially for his first foods.
Bananas
By far the easiest in my mind. All you need to do is peel it open and break it into pieces to put into the blender. For your baby’s first foods you want to make sure it is basically liquid. That way it’s not as big of a transition from the formula or breast milk they are used to.
Directions: Peel the banana and break into pieces to put into the blender. Add water. Blend for 10 seconds. Pour into containers and freeze.
1 banana
1/4 cup water or breastmilk (more if needed to get the right consistency)
Avocado
Again this one is pretty easy. For the first baby foods, I would suggest pouring about 1 ounce of food into each container. You generally aren’t going to use more than that because their main diet is still the formula or breast milk. This is just to get them started on a new idea of what food is.
Directions: Cut open the avocado and take out the seed. Then scrap the avocado into your blender and add some water. Blend for 10 seconds. Pour into containers and freeze.
1 Avocado
1/4 cup water or breastmilk (more if needed to get the right consistency)
Peas
You may want to start with the vegetable as the first food. I mean who doesn’t love fruit more than vegetables? This way your child gets used to vegetables before just demanding fruit. That’s just how I saw it at least! Peas are super easy to make as well. You can steam them on the stove but what I’ve found to be easiest is buying the frozen bags of peas and steaming them in the microwave.
Directions: Follow the directions on the back of the bag to steam the peas in your microwave. Let cool for a few minutes and then empty the bag into the blender. Add your water and blend together for 15 seconds. Pour into containers and freeze.
1 Package Frozen Peas
1/2 cup of water or breastmilk (more if needed to get the right consistency)
I hope you found these recipes helpful. Be sure to take the 4-day rule into account! It’s best to have your baby try one food for 4 days before moving onto the next food. That way if they develop any reactions you know which food it is coming from. Also, be sure to talk to your child’s doctor to be sure they are ready to start foods.
Keep creating your own sunshine,
