If you are like us we live in a place where winter consumes about 6 months of the year. We get a lot of cold and a lot of snow and because of this, we are inside a lot of the time. So one day I thought why don’t I just bring the snow inside for my kids! With the snow, we made this easy winter sensory bin that has been one of my toddlers’ favorite activities this winter.
What you will need:
- a plastic container
- snow from the backyard
- miscellaneous kitchen utensils
- towel or plastic tablecloth (optional)
Winter Sensory Bin Set Up:
I like to make our sensory bins as easy to set up as possible with things that would be okay if by some chance they ended up in my kids’ mouths. (my 1-year-old can be pretty sneaky) I always use a big plastic Tupperware container for our bin. You can use whatever you have around the house to make your sensory bin work! Then the fill for this winter sensory bin is snow from our backyard. I took a few shovels full and put it into the plastic bin to fill it up most of the way. Next, I fill it with things I have around the kitchen for my kids to use their imagination with. My 4-year-old’s favorite was the cookie cutters to use in the snow and my 1-year-old’s favorite was little tablespoon scoops. Other ideas you can use are:
- ice cube trays which are great for moving the snow back and forth.
- spoons
- straws
- measuring cups
- plastic spatula
Lastly, I like to just put the sensory bin right on our floor to make it easy for my kids to play with so I also put down a cheap plastic tablecloth to keep the mess contained. You could also use a big beach towel or let them play with their bin in the bathtub to keep the mess in one spot!
I hope your kiddos enjoy this easy winter sensory bin as much as my little ones did! Looking for some fun Christmas crafts for you kids check out this post!
